The 8 MB limit, and what actually counts against it
Discord's free tier caps a single upload at 8 MB, and it is enforced before the file leaves your machine — you get the rejection immediately rather than after a long upload. Nitro raises it, but most servers are full of people who do not have Nitro, so 8 MB remains the figure worth designing around if you want everyone to see what you posted.
Screen recordings and phone photos are the two things that routinely blow past it. A modern phone photo is two to six megabytes and usually fine; a burst of them in one message is not, because the limit applies per file but the client will still refuse the message. Compressing to a budget per image is the reliable fix.

Questions
What is Discord's file size limit?
8 MB per file on the free tier. Nitro subscriptions raise it substantially, and boosted servers raise it for everyone in that server — but 8 MB is the figure that works for every viewer regardless of what they pay.
Why does Discord reject my image before it even uploads?
Because the limit is checked client-side, before any bytes are sent. That is actually good news: you find out instantly instead of after a two-minute upload, and you can compress and retry straight away.
