200 KB is the practical ceiling for a web page image

Two hundred kilobytes is not usually a hard limit imposed by a form — it is the size web performance guidance settled on for a large in-page image. Below it, a photo loads inside the window most people will wait, even on a mid-range phone on mobile data. Above it, you start paying for it in the metrics search engines actually measure.

It is also a comfortable budget rather than a punishing one. A well-photographed 1600 pixel wide image will usually land under 200 KB at a quality setting nobody would describe as degraded, which is why this is the default preset on the tool.
